7 Strange Robots the Pentagon is Developing

With a budget in excess of $600 billion, the pentagon is hard at work researching technology that is sometimes bizarre and out of this world. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA is busy bringing in robotic creations to the pentagon that are craziest at the least. Here is a list of some of the strange robots the pentagon has in mind.

No 7. BigDog

BigDog is a dynamically stable quadruped robot created by Boston Dynamics with Foster-Miller, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Harvard University Concord Field Station. It was made in 2005 and can haul, climb, and carry its way over rough terrain. Capable of traversing difficult terrains, running at 4 miles per hour, carrying 340 pounds, and climbing a 35 degree incline, BigDog is intended to one day be able to serve as a robotic pack mule to accompany soldiers in terrain too rough for conventional vehicles.
This strange-looking robot is powered by a two-stroke, one-cylinder and 15-HP go-kart engine operating at over 9,000 RPM.

No 6. Nano Hummingbird Drone

Developed by AeroVironmen, the Nano hummingbird drone is built to look like a bird for potential use in spy missions. It is capable of flying at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour, hovering and flying sideways, backward and forward, as well as going clockwise and counterclockwise, by remote control for about eight minutes of sustained flight.
Evidently, the technology needs a lot of polishing before being put to some actual use.

No 5. LittleDog

A quadruped robot designed for research on learning locomotion, the LittleDog’s four legs are each powered by three electric motors and are strong enough for climbing and “dynamic locomotion gaits.”

No 4. RiSE Climbing Robot

RiSE is a robot capable of climbing vertical terrain such as walls, trees and fences. It has “feet with micro-claws” to climb on textured surfaces. It weighs at 4.4 punds and is able to travel at 0.68 miles per hour.
It has six legs, an on-board computer that manages the coordination of these legs and a variety of sensors.

No 3. PetMan

This is a bipedal device constructed for testing chemical protection suits. The technology is basically derived from BigDog with advanced features such as sweating; simulating both human movement mechanics and human physiology to a much realistic extent.
PetMan is capable of walking on a treadmill i.e. walking, doing squats and pumping out push-ups. It also has a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range.
And as Boston Dynamics President Marc Raibert said:
“Places like the Fukushima reactors could be accessed by Petman-like robots (or AlphaDogs), without requiring any human exposure to hazardous materials. Perhaps firefighting inside of buildings or facilities designed for human access, like on board ships designed for human crews.”

Do you know how a Bladeless Fan Work?

Ever heard of a bladeless fan? Who would have thought that electric fans will go bladeless?  Technology never sits still... even in the world of simple household items like electric fans.  Bladeless fans works like conventional electric fans but with a few more benefits.
How does it produce a breeze when it doesn’t have blades?
How Do Bladeless Fans Work?
A bladeless electric fan has two major components: the base and the circular tube.  The base sucks in the air and releases it via the circular tube.  It is as simple as that.  The base has a vent which is the entry point of the air.  Inside the base is the motor which sucks the air and releases it in the circular tube.  The air flows around the tube and exits to create a steady stream of air.
Bladeless Fans Are Very Safe
Because, it doesn’t have blades and works like ordinary electric fans, bladeless fans are very safe.  There’s no need to worry about your kid poking his fingers in the hole.  Traditional fans are much more dangerous especially if you have little ones around.

Bladeless Fans Are Very Easy To Clean
Since it doesn’t have blades, no screws to loosen, no parts to removed, cleaning is very easy.  Just wipe a cloth around the unit to clean it.  You can use damp cloth to remove sticky dirt and wipe it with a clean dry cloth.  You time because you do not need to dismantle fan and put it back together everytime you clean it which is super convenient.
Bladeless Electric Fans Have A Consistent Airflow
The problem with older electric fan models is that they don’t offer consistent airflow even if the fan is pointed directly at you.  Because the blade is slanted and a little bit twisted, the air it provides tends to be inconsistent. With bladeless fans, air is consistent and contstant.  Moreover, some manufacturers are claiming that bladeless electric fans give 15 times better air circulation than traditional models.
Bladeless Fans Are Very Dependable
You can throw away your old electric fan and replace it with bladeless fan since it has the same features and functions but with fewer disadvantages as mentioned earlier. Bladeless fans can also oscilate; meaning the circular tube moves at an angle of 90 degrees from left to right and vice-versa. You can also tilt it upwards or downwards.
What About the Price of a Bladeless Fan?
Bladeless fans are more expensive than its older predecessor.  However, the benefits that you gain, especially in regards to safety and convenience of cleaning outweigh the extra cost.  It is more expensive to become hospitalized due to fingers being caught by the blades than the price of this item.
So go ahead, replace your old household fans with one of these current models which are safer, easier to clean, more functional, and more dependable.

How you can to Buying Meat

How you can to Buying  Meat

What to Look for When Buying Different Types of Meat

It can be quite difficult in figuring out what is the best meat to buy. Where should you buy your meat? From the supermarket? From the butcher? What is best? Organic or non-organic? You want the best quality of meat, but don’t know what to look for. And with all the different types of cuts of meat, what is the best type for your meal or recipe? This guide will help you be informed about the different types of meats and cuts available.

Choosing Meat

When selecting meat, there are some key factors you need to be aware of and look for, regardless of what type of meat you are purchasing.

Fat found around the edge of the meat should be a creamy-white colour. If it is a yellowish colour that suggests that the meat is aged.

The surface of the meat should be dry and sticky, not wet.

Too much gristle will make the meat tough. While a thin layer of gristle is normal, if there is a thick layer of gristle between the fat and the meat, it means that the cut probably came from an old, tough animal.

Don’t by pre-packaged meat if it is swimming in blood.

By keeping an eye out for these points when you are next buying meat, you should be able to make sure that you are purchasing the best, freshest cuts of meat. Now let’s look at the different types of meats and cuts that are available.

Beef

Beef comes from bullocks or heifers that haven’t bred. Veal comes from calves that are a few months old, and the most widely bought and available beef comes from yearlings, who are between eight and ten months old.

DIFFERENT CUTS OF BEEF

FILLET: also called tenderloin and is the leanest and most tender. It is usually quite expensive, but can be roasted whole or cut into steaks for grilling, barbequing or pan-frying.

RIB ROAST: the finest type of beef. Rib eye is usually cut into steaks.

SIRLOIN: usually roasted or cut into steaks. T-Bone and Porterhouse steaks are part sirloin and part fillet. All three are tender and lean, making them perfect for quick cooking.

MINCE: this ground beef comes in various different grades, with the best being topside mince.

BRISKET: is tough unless properly slow-cooked.

SHIN: comes with or without the bone and is cooked very slowly for a long time to produce a tender, full-bodied stew.

Lamb

Lamb comes from the animal when it is between three and ten months old, were mutton is when the animal is two or more years old. Although meat from younger animals is considered to be tenderer, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has the best flavour.

DIFFERENT CUTS OF LAMB

LEG: a tender piece of meat that is mainly used for roasting. It is sold on or off the bone, or as a butterfly cut. It can also be cut into shanks and steaks for grilling, pan-frying, barbequing or slow cooking.

LOIN: this cut is the most tender and great for roasting and barbequing.

BACKSTRAP: a boneless cut that is good for grilling or barbequing.

FILLET: also called tenderloin, it is delicate in texture and flavour, and is ideal for quick cooking.

SHOULDER: either boned or on the bone, this cut is usually makes for a cheaper and more flavoursome roast. It is also sold as chops and cubed for stewing.

FOREQUARTER: comes from the upper should section and is sinewy, so as chops or as a roast it is best slow-cooked.

RACK: is a tender cut of the first eight ribs of the lamb. It is either sold as one piece, or cut up into cutlets for grilling or pan frying.

BREAST: also sometimes called ‘flap’, this is a cheap, fatty cut of meat that can be used for pot-roasting.

SCRAG: the middle section of the neck is sold in thick slices to be used in stews.

CHUMP: from just above the leg, and is usually cut into chops for grilling, but can be roasted as a whole piece.

Pork

When buying pork, keep in mind that it is the general consensus amongst top chefs that female pigs taste much better than male pigs.

DIFFERENT CUTS OF PORK

LEG: a tender cut that is best roasted. You can also get pork steaks, which are great grilled or pan-fried. The hock or shank is usually slow roasted or sold pickled. The pork hind leg is usually cured for ham.

LOIN: can also be roasted, but also cut into chops or cutlets.

FILLET: can be flavoured and cooked quickly.

BELLY: a fattier cut that is usually braised or slow roasted. There is also the pork spare ribs in this section, which can be marinated and either barbequed or slow roasted

How to plant tomatoes at home

How to plant tomatoes at home
Tomatoes are an edible fruit which originated in America. Tomatoes can be consumed in many ways including raw, juice, sauce and also as drinks. It is one of the most common fruit found on virtually every dining table at some meal throughout the week. Tomatoes are used for many dishes and are highly in demand.

There has been a recent shortage of tomatoes and the prices for them and for products made from them are really skyrocketing.  Although it is highly in demand, it is very easy to grow the plant. McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants in some regions will only place tomatoes on your burger if you request it. This is directly due to the price.

Tomatoes can be cultivated in places that are warm and at the same time little damp. It is one of the easiest plants which could be grown in your backyard. There are hundreds of varieties of tomatoes and most of them could be grown in the backyard itself. You will have to do a little work to cultivate the soil.  However, with a little effort you could grow your own tomatoes.

Growing the Tomatoes
The average tomato plant grows up to 6 feet tall when provided with proper water and sunlight. The average time a tomato plant takes to grow is about 3 months. You can begin planting tomatoes in your backyard by buying some tomato plants from the nearby nursery. If you would like to grow it from seeds, it is better to keep them in a greenhouse a month before planting them outside. It is advisable to grow them 6 to 10 inches tall before planting them outside. Tomatoes grow well during spring season and it is the best time of the year to grow them

A single tomato plant can serve up to 3 members in a family and it is usually better to plant two or three plants at the same time. The tomato plant requires a healthy amount of sunlight up to 7 hours a day and you should consider planting them in sunny areas.

These plant requires a good amount of organic matter for healthy growth. It is necessary to add a good amount, about 5 to 8 pounds of compost per square foot of land to supply the organic medium for the tomatoes to grow. If you can't make your own compost, it is better to buy compost or manure from any of the nearby stores. Each plant needs to bury well under the ground. Almost 50 to 75% of each plant needs to be buried under the ground. Only the deeply buried plants grow well as they have a strong root. After being planted, it is necessary to water the plants immediately. About 2 gallons of warm water is to be poured on the plant in order to avoid any transplantation shocks to the tomato vines.

Each tomato plant needs its own space to develop strong roots and there must be a minimum distance of 36 inches between the other plants to avoid overcrowding. Leaving optimum space not only develops strong roots, it also gives enough room for you to water them and move around. Watering the vine is crucial and it is enough to water the tomato plants with at least a gallon of water each day for the first ten days.

It is best to place a bunch of grass or straw around each plant to prevent the soil from getting dry during warm conditions. After the first 2 weeks, the plant requires about a half a gallon of water every day. It is better to increase the amount of water as the plant grows in size. Tomatoes are a fruit that is mostly water.  Therefore, if you want a juicy fruit, you need to supply the water to the plant.

It is also advisable to use a tomato cage or a stake after the first 2 weeks. A good cage needs to be at least 4-5 feet tall and must be strong enough to hold the leaves as the plant tends to pull it down. My friend instructed me the cages should be strong enough to make sure the wind does
not pull them down.  He said he has had this happen many times until he started to pay more for the cages and left the cheaper ones at the store.

It will be better to use fertilizers to stimulate the growth of the plant. Tomatoes don't grow well with lawn fertilizers and organic fertilizers such as vegetable fertilizers suits them better. The tomato plants can be pollinated by shaking them gently for five seconds after they start to flower. Tomato plants take almost 90 days to flower. Initially the fruits will be small in size and green colored. It is necessary to leave them undisturbed until they change into big, dark red tomatoes. Fully ripe tomatoes are dark red in color and can be characterized by their softness. The fruit can also be picked before they are fully ripe to protect them from birds and predators. The fruits which are picked earlier must be kept in a sunny place to allow them to ripen completely. I actually prefer to pick them early and let them ripen.

Conclusion
My friend spends more time that most on his backyard tomato garden.  I have to admit, he gets great results and more than enough tomatoes for the entire family and my family too.  I would say that most people can grow decent tomatoes with the initial time investment of a few hours and then 5-10 minutes the first few days and then even less until it is time to pick. You may have to find a few minutes to pluck the fruit off the vines and to wash them and prepare them to eat.
We use the tomatoes for many purposes but my favorite is just to slice them when they are not too ripe, put some salt on them and eat them by their self.  Tomatoes are very healthy and have a lot of vitamins that can help your family lead a healthier lifestyle.  They are a fruit, not a vegetable, so remember this when you are following the guidelines of what to eat.

Tomatoes are the easiest of the plants that could be grown in the backyard. With little care, they can satisfy the needs of your family in as low as 90 days.

How To do a Hair Bow

1.  Begin by taking one small section of hair from each side of your head.  The bigger the sections, the bigger the bow.

 2.  Tie the two sections together with an elastic to create a half ponytail.  Don't pull the ends through the elastic the last time you wrap it to create a loop like the picture on the right.
 3.  Split the loop in half to create two smaller loops and clip one loop aside for later.
 4.  Use your fingers to spread out the loop and push it flat against your head into a bow shape.  Insert one bobby pin going from top to bottom and one going from bottom to top.
 5.  Repeat on the opposite side to finish the bow shape.
 6.  Pick up the remaining ends of the ponytail and wrap them up and around the elastic to hide it.  Secure it with bobby pins underneath.

How to Make a Bow out of Your Hair

Brush to remove any tangles or snags. For a clean, smooth bow you’ll want to make sure your hair is ready for styling.

Pull your hair back into a ponytail. Instead of pulling the ponytail all the way through, create a loop using about half to three quarters of the hair in the ponytail, leaving a long loose end. Tuck the loose end into the elastic to keep the loop in place. (This loose end becomes the centerpiece of the bow.) You should be left with what resembles a loose bun with the hair ends securely fastened underneath the hair tie.
  • Adjust the hair tie if needed. If you didn’t get a good grip on the hair ends, your bow may fall flat. Make sure that both your ponytail and its ends are very secure in the hair tie. This may take a few passes until you get a feel of how tightly you can wind the hair tie.

Divide the looped hair. Section off your hair into two evenly distributed sections (these will form the sides of the bow). Use the mirror to guide the division and to help you keep it even.

Create the middle piece of the bow. Take the loose strand of hair in front of the bow and pull it back over and through the middle of your bow sections. Then:
  • Tuck the strands of hair securely into the hair tie. You may need to use a little hairspray to keep the hair in place but try to stuff as much of the top strand into the hair tie as possible.
  • Secure the strand with bobby pins. Push at least three or four pins into the strand and into the hair tie to connect the entire piece.Fluff out the bow. Use a teasing comb or your fingers to fluff the hair. This is where you shape and create the actual bow. If your hair doesn’t hold the bow shape on its own, hold one section out and spray with extra-hold hairspray. Do the same with the other section.

Why Does My Cat Pee So Much?Is it diabetes?

Is it diabetes?
One of the main symptoms of diabetes in humans and cats is thirst, they need to drink and  because they need to drink they pee, so if your cat is peeing more than usual it is   worth considering taking them to the veterinarian surgeon to check if they  have feline diabetes. If they are really desperate for a drink they will drink anything, even trying to catch the drips from your bath taps.

Diabetes or feline diabetes mellitus occurs when the cat’s body does not produce insulin in sufficient quantities to keep the blood sugar levels in balance. The disease is just the same as the human condition and needs treatment often with diet or insulin therapy which is the same treatment as humans receive.

Testing and treatment for diabetic cats
If your veterinarian suspects that your cat has developed diabetes he will take a blood sample.

This sample will show the level of your cats sugar , depending on the result he may ask you to feed your cat differently and then come back to see if the food has lowered your pets blood sugar levels.

I think most owners will worry when  the veterinarian tells them  their cat has diabetes. You will need to develop a good, trusting relationship with your veterinarian , who will probably suggest that she follows a low carbohydrate diet. ( That would probably be quite popular with a meat-eating cat!). Try to avoid the dried foods as they usually contain a large amount of carbohydrates. There are several types of cat foods specifically made for diabetic cats or you can also feed chicken and fish. Regular visits to the veterinarian become part of the routine to check the cat’s blood sugar levels and he will prescribe proper levels of insulin for the cat. The best way to give insulin is by injection, so the veterinarian will teach you how to give your cat her shot. It can  easier to give the cat her shot at home as she  could be  more confident with you as she is more familiar with your voice and her surroundings. If your cat is pliable you can  take blood tests at home as only a small sample, a drop of blood is used . The blood sugar level is usually measured by using a blood glucose monitor , these are not especially made for cats but it is possible to use a human one.

Other symptoms of feline diabetes
Is your cat overweight?
It is a fact that many of our pet cats are overweight. Weighing

a cat to record its body weight is almost always done when you take your cat for its yearly injections and any increase is usually accompanied with a stern reprimand from the veterinarian. Increased availability of cat food and its relative cheapness means that many of us are feeding our cats too much and like humans it is the overweight cat who has a higher risk of developing diabetes Cats like to eat and if faced with extra special treats they are hardly likely to think of their waist lines!

Sometimes the symptoms of diabetes manifest themselves as the  loss of their appetite followed by weight loss and sometimes accompanied by vomiting and maybe  very dry skin. At the same time other cats may find themselves really hungry and eat and eat as the high level of sugar in their blood means that they are unable to metabolize the nutrients included in their food It is really hard for the cat owner to distinguish between the hungry cat and the cat who is hungry because they are ill. If you cat's eating pattern changes radically then it is really important to let the veterinarian know this on your next visit. Sometimes cats can become diabetic when they are pregnant and the veterinarian will keep a careful watch on her, as the kittens could end up being very big. Like many human mothers this gestational diabetes often disappears after the birth.

Hypoglycemic attacks
Like humans cats can suffer from low blood sugar

and have a hypoglycemic attack, my dad used to call them hypo. It is when for some reason the blood sugar has dropped really low. This is a serious condition with symptoms of lethargy and coldness which can lead to a coma or death. A woman in our area died a few weeks ago of a hypo, so it is important to treat your cat immediately if you suspect this. There are some sugar gels available in good drug stores and if you suspect a hypo careful rub a small drop of gel into the cat's mouth so that she has to suck it, this will need to be repeated until she comes round. Next, give her something to eat and then call the vet, chances are that he will wish to see her to check her blood sugar levels and adjust her insulin. Above all don’t panic as this is treatable with a calm response, just deadly if you don’t treat it.

Diabetic cats need extra care but can have a happy, full and enjoyable life.
